NEW YORK CHILD VICTIM’S ACT SIGNED INTO LAW BY GOVERNOR CUOMO

With Governor Cuomo signing the Child Victim Act into law on February 14, 2019, the clock starts to click for New York victims of sexual abuse to take action. The law provides for a 6 month waiting period before you can file. This means that starting on August 14, 2019, victims who were sexually abused at any time in their life in New York state have just one year to file their claims against their abuser and the institution which hired the abuser or in which the abuser was a volunteer. Though you can’t file your lawsuit until August 14, 2019, you can use this time with your lawyer to prepare your case and gather the necessary documents to file the case when the statute does become effective.  If you were are a New York sexual abuse survivor, please contact the law office of Michael Dowd to learn your options.
