Michael Dowd’s experience in representing victims of sexual abuse speaks for itself. In 1995, seven years before the Boston Globe broke the story of the sexual abuse scandal in the Archdiocese of Boston which set off a national wave of lawsuits agaisnt the Catholic Church, Michael sued the Archdicoese of New York, one of the most powerful Archdiocese in the United States. He represented a boy who was sexually abused by his Bronx parochial school teacher. This was the first sexual abuse case against a New York area Diocese to go to trial. The case settled after just three days of testimony. Since that case Michael has represented several hundred  people who were sexually abused as children by their priests, rabbis, public and private school teachers, Boy Scout leaders and others in positions of authority over children.

Obtained Largest Jury Verdict in a Catholic Church Sexual Abuse Case in New York

In 2003 and 2004 he represented the largest number of Catholic Church victims in New York City in separate cases against the Archdiocese of New York, the Brooklyn Diocese and the Rockville Centre Diocese. In 2007, he  along with California attorney Paul Mones (who was admitted pro hac vice) won an 11.4 million dollar verdict against the Diocese of Rockville Centre in a case involving two teenagers who were sexually molested by their youth minister in a Long Island parish. That verdict stands as not only the largest jury verdict in a Catholic Church sexual abuse case in New York, but according to Bishop Accountability, one of the largest individual jury verdicts against the Catholic Church in the nation.

Historic 20 Million Dollar Jury Award

He has also represented victims against a whole host of  other New York institutions like the Harlem Boys Choir, the Horace Mann School, the Riverdale Country School, the Greater New York Council, Boy Scouts of America and Salesian High School. In March of 2017, he obtained what the NY Daily News termed “a historic 20 million dollar jury award” in Connecticut on behalf of New York resident who was sexually abused by her father.

Michael Dowd has been fighting for victims of abuse before the subject became so well known. He understands the plight of victims of sexual abuse and is a staunch defender of their rights to justice.
